Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your first appointment.

If you have concerns about your child's speech or language development, trust your instincts — early intervention makes a real difference. Common signs include difficulty being understood by others, limited vocabulary, trouble following directions, stuttering, or challenges with reading and writing. A comprehensive evaluation will tell us exactly where your child stands.
Absolutely. Adults seek speech therapy for many reasons including stuttering, voice disorders, articulation, language difficulties following neurological events, and reading or writing challenges. It's never too late to improve communication skills and confidence.
No referral is required to schedule an evaluation or treatment at Achieving Better Communication. You can call us directly at (563) 257-4040 or use our contact form. Some insurance plans may require a physician referral for reimbursement — we'll help you navigate that.
We are currently in the process of credentialing with major insurance networks. In the meantime, we are a private-pay practice and provide detailed superbills after each session that you can submit to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Many families receive partial or full reimbursement this way.
A superbill is an itemized receipt with all the billing codes your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement claim. You pay us at the time of service, then submit the superbill to your insurer. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you'll receive a check back directly from your insurance company. We'll provide clear instructions every step of the way.
Initial evaluations typically take 60–90 minutes. Ongoing therapy sessions are generally 45–60 minutes. The frequency of sessions varies based on each person's needs and goals — we'll discuss a recommended schedule after your evaluation.
